Description: "What can an anthropologist do, to overcome that most native of traits, the feigned disinterest or ridicule which the primitive affords him in place of fear. The chortling at one's clothes, one's discomfort in the heat or cold, one's unfair ignorance at their ways and mores? I would say to this, one thing; bring one's own furniture. As much as can be carried on the backs of others. With furniture you construct your own, competing civilisation, which forces the primitive to reveal himself fully, without superciliousness, and which can also be used, helpfully, to relieve one's own weight during those long periods of inactivity which characterize unenlightened routines. As to aesthetic, I would counsel that of the great travellers, the Edwardians; theirs had the very shapeliest legs. I have seen many a bug-eyed shaman hunter brought humble by the sight of a cedar calf, a maple lion's paw manicured into civility, with the hint of something more voluptuous just past the upholstery. I, myself, possess a beautiful Adams tuffet and matching chaise lounge, which to the uneducated eye look like a pair of transformed, quadrupedal Amazons, discussing their beauty in the wood."
